PDF/A

Back to knowledge base

PDF is an acronym for Portable Document Format.

PDF/A extends this acronym and means 'PDF for Archive'.  PDF/A is an ISO-standardized version of PDF designed for long-term data archiving.

Even though companies like Adobe are continually pushing PDF to do more and more things -- like include audio and video content, Javascript, embedded encryption, etc., all of these are expressly forbidden in PDF/A.  Other specifications for PDF/A include:

  • All fonts must be embedded
  • No external content references
  • Standards-based metadata
  • Strict image compression formats

All Udocx scanning and conversion functions generate PDF/A documents.
